As North Texas home builders, we’ve seen a lot of different home styles over the years. It’s one of the reasons we love custom building as much as we do. There are so many different ways to design a home, and we’re always impressed by the creativity we see in North Texas communities.

With all of that in mind, we sat down and reviewed some of the groundbreaking tech trends that we’re seeing in the market. Many of these trends have already been incorporated into our custom home builds, and we expect to see them continue to gain momentum through the end of 2023 and into 2024.

Home Office Spaces

Remote work was already picking up steam before COVID-19, but the pandemic cemented remote work as a viable option for many workers. Depending on how you phrase the question and classify remote work, somewhere between 10 and 20% of Texans work remotely. This is certainly a high percentage, but this stat excludes those who work hybrid or have the option to utilize remote days.

Even jobs that are not typically fully remote are still likely to utilize remote work occasionally. (For example – a contractor who needs an admin day to reply to emails, schedule jobs, and deal with operational duties.)

Consequently, home office spaces are becoming all the rage. Some homeowners will still utilize an extra bedroom as a makeshift office, but many custom home buyers are looking for dedicated workspaces with built-in desks and advanced Wi-Fi compatibility. We don’t expect to see this trend going anywhere anytime soon.

High Tech Construction Services

The digital era has revolutionized many industries, and custom home building is no exception. Builders are finding many options available for them as they build, and many are utilizing this new home building tech to ensure a higher level of quality for the homeowner and construction worker.

Whether it’s enhanced camera technology to monitor build sites for safety risks, using robotics technology to automate repetitive tasks, or utilizing drones for virtual flyovers of potential properties, home builders are using advanced technology to improve the build experience for workers, builders, and homeowners. This will continue to accelerate into 2024 and beyond, as artificial intelligence reduces cost and increases adaption.

Eco-Friendly Design

If you’ve spent time in North Texas, you know how extreme the weather can be. From 110-degree heat in the summer to ice storms in the winter, your home needs to be prepared, and many custom home builders are starting to take note.

As a result, we’re seeing many eco-friendly design trends become more prevalent across North Texas. Eco-friendly insulation, optimized systems within the home, and EnergyStar-recognized neighborhoods are emerging trends in custom-built homes. This even extends to the actual materials that builders are using.

Solar panels and eco-friendly materials are two rapidly growing trends within home building, as it has become more cost-efficient to produce and install these materials. We expect advancements in production within the home building tech industry to continue to make eco-friendly design attractive to potential home builders.

The reasons why homeowners are so interested in eco-friendly design are varied. Some home buyers are looking to reduce their carbon footprint. Others are looking to lower their utility bills. Regardless of the reason, eco-friendly builds are popular, and we see no reason why this will change.

Flexible Interior Use

Many home buyers are searching for homes with spaces that can be used for multiple purposes. It can be very convenient, for example, to have a room that can be used as an office during the day and a make-shift guest room when friends and family come to stay.

With many Americans spending more of their time at home, we’re seeing some very creative uses of interior space. Rollaway beds, tucked-away alcoves that double as breakfast nooks, libraries, or lookouts, and sliding walls can all be utilized to give homeowners flexible use of their spaces.

Outdoor Living Spaces

While we’ve seen many home interior trends, outdoor living spaces are also an important focal point for many homeowners. We’re seeing many home buyers thinking creatively about how to optimize their yards. Screened-in porches, gazebos, backyard sheds, garden fences, lawns, fountains, koi ponds, and game courts are all ways home builders are spicing up the outdoors.
