Ask yourself the following follow-up questions to ensure this is really what you want:

- Can I Easily Find This Elsewhere on the Market?
- How Much Effort Would It Take to Build What I Want, vs. Add It as an Addition on an Existing House?
Do You Understand How Different the Process Can Be?
You probably know that building a custom home is quite a bit different from buying an existing home, but you might be surprised to know just how different the custom build process is. Everything from land clearing to specific financing to shortages in the local labor market comes into play. Take the time to research what separates a custom-built home from purchasing an existing home before you commit to building a custom home.
Do You Own Land?
If you own a plot of land and it’s cleared and prepped for construction to begin, you might be better served by building a custom home. Even if the site is not prepped for construction quite yet, it is a great place to be in the process. If you own your own plot of land and can see a custom home fitting well on said land, building a custom home might be the best course of action for you.
Are You Willing to Be a Part of the Process?
Building a custom home requires a decent amount of input and exchange between the homebuilder and the client. Everything from approving a floor plan to project status updates takes up time. The most successful custom home builds are two-way streets of clear and direct communication between client and builder. If you don’t have time or know that you will not be free to discuss the project or offer feedback, it might be worth foregoing building a custom home.
Do You Have Time?
There are several ways to expedite the construction of a custom home, but it will still take some time to complete the project. If you’re set on moving into your home as soon as possible, building a custom home from scratch is probably not the right call. The average custom home can take up to eighteen months to finalize. Now, a well-qualified and seasoned custom home builder will help expedite your project and mitigate any risk of delay, but construction does take time. Be sure you can take this time, as it’s oftentimes the biggest and most nonnegotiable difference between building a custom home and purchasing one.
