2. Multi-Purpose Rooms
Creating multiple dedicated bedrooms is one approach, but perhaps you’d like to design something a little more versatile. A few well-placed sliding walls can truly change how you use your space. We’ve seen these sorts of dual-use spaces grow in popularity over the last few years. Imagine having two guests over and only having one guest bedroom. A sliding wall across the room could take one guest bedroom into two. That’s a classic example, but there are other possibilities as well! We’ve seen an increasing number of detached tiny homes, cabins, and bungalows over the last few years – all of which can be great ways to host guests outside of the four walls of your home. We’ve seen the finished results vary considerably. Some backyard homes are quite small, little more than a bunk bed and four walls, while others can be relatively large and include running water.
Outdoor social spaces can also be something to consider. Everything from pizza ovens to outdoor bars to bonfire pits can give you an exciting social space when guests are over!
4. Communal Living Space
Hosting guests doesn’t necessarily mean overnight. You probably will want to have folks over for a barbecue, watch party, or holiday event at some point. If that’s on your docket as a custom homeowner, then be sure to plan accordingly within your floor plan.
5. Dedicated Entertainment Space
In that same vein, think of all the ways that a specific entertainment space can help you host. There’s a time and place for a convertible living space, but certain types of dedicated entertainment spaces can help in this endeavor as well. Think:

- Wine Tasting Room or Cellar
- Game Room or Rec Room
- Home Sauna
- Home Spa
